The exhibit “Designing Women: Three Early American Book Artists” is currently on display in Special Collections, The College of Wooster Libraries. This exhibit highlights work by three of the earliest professional artists enlisted to provide designs for publishers’ cloth bindings in the late 19th century. Book designs by Margaret Armstrong, Sarah Whitman, and Amy Richards illustrate the changing aesthetic of 19th century America towards the modern design philosophies that emerged with the Arts and Crafts Movement and, later, Art Nouveau. As women had long been involved with the traditional aspects of bindery work that included stitching and case making, women were also among the first artists who provided designs for the cloth covers that flourished at the turn of the 20th century as part of the growing movement that appreciated the book as art, as well as the book as text. These materials will be on display October 23, - December 23, 2009. For more information about the exhibit, contact Denise Monbarren at ext. 2527 or Elaine Smith Snyder at ext. 2155. Special arrangements can be made for classes or small groups to view more materials from our collection.

This Saturday, October 3rd, the Ohio State computing facility is fixing a major electrical problem from damage it sustained on June 26, 2009. They have been using a workaround since then but need a permanent fix and must install a new high- voltage electrical switch. Because of that, they will have the power off to the facility starting around 5:30 in the morning and lasting until around 8 p.m. in the evening. Since this is the facility where all of OhioLINK’s database systems are located, they will be forced to take their equipment off line starting around 4 a.m. Saturday. No backup generator power will be available during this time. They will bring their systems back online as soon as it is safe to do so after the work is completed. CAVEAT: If it is raining that day, this electrical work cannot be completed so this will be canceled and the systems will remain up. It is the understanding of OhioLINK that this is emergency repair work and has to be done now as opposed to putting it off until a less busy time. This affects the OhioLINK Central Catalog as well as any databases that have Ohiolink in the URL. It will not affect other resources such as the EBSCOhost databases, LexisNexis, etc. Please contact the Libraries if you have questions.

“Early Primers and Textbooks” is currently on display in Special Collections, The College of Wooster Libraries. This exhibit includes the Early University of Wooster Textbook Collection—a collection of core textbooks used by the university during its first 20 years (1870/71 through 1889/90). 19th-century reading, spelling, grammar, and mathematics texts published in the United States are also included, highlighting well-known works, such as the McGuffey Readers and Ray’s New Primary Arithmetic texts. These works were published as part of the Eclectic Series by The American Book Company and document an important period of our publishing history. Several of these textbooks were published in Ohio to meet the growing demands for education that accompanied westward expansion in our own state.

The exhibit is available for viewing Monday – Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., August 24 – October 2, 2009. Special arrangements can be made to view additional works from our collections. For more information, contact Denise Monbarren (ext. 2527) or Elaine Smith Snyder (ext. 2155).
