New Exhibit in Special Collections

September 8th, 2010

The exhibit “For Love of Wooster: A Celebration of Song” is currently on display in Special Collections, The College of Wooster Libraries, August 25 – October 15, 2010.

From “Wooster Love Song (Alma Mater)” penned by Ralph E. Plumer (Class of 1906) to “The Wooster March Song” written by President Howard F. Lowry when he was a student in 1923, students have been inspired to write music and lyrics to capture the spirit of their years at Wooster.

This exhibit highlights just a few of the many songs in our College Archives Collection written for and by the campus community over the years. Special prize contests and changing times allowed for the creation of fight songs, parodies, and even dueling Alma Maters in the early 1960s when “The Elms Are in Their Beauty,” written by Sue Marshall Brairton (Class of 1960) and Patricia Carson Mordecai (Class of 1960), was proposed as an alternative to the traditional Alma Mater.

The exhibit is available for viewing Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for classes or small groups to view more materials from our collection. For more information about the exhibit, contact Denise Monbarren at ext. 2527 or Elaine Smith Snyder at ext. 2155.
