“Early Primers and Textbooks” in Special Collections

August 21st, 2009

“Early Primers and Textbooks” is currently on display in Special Collections, The College of Wooster Libraries.  This exhibit includes the Early University of Wooster Textbook Collection—a collection of core textbooks used by the university during its first 20 years (1870/71 through 1889/90).  19th-century reading, spelling, grammar, and mathematics texts published in the United States are also included, highlighting well-known works, such as the McGuffey Readers and Ray’s New Primary Arithmetic texts.   These works were published as part of the Eclectic Series by The American Book Company and document an important period of our publishing history.  Several of these textbooks were published in Ohio to meet the growing demands for education that accompanied westward expansion in our own state.

The exhibit is available for viewing Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., August 24 – October 2, 2009.  Special arrangements can be made to view additional works from our collections.  For more information, contact Denise Monbarren (ext. 2527) or Elaine Smith Snyder (ext. 2155).
